David Duke made it perfectly clear that he has no idea whether or not Rep. Steve Scalise spoke to a white supremacist meeting in 2002.
The former grand wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan appeared with CNN’s Michael Smerconish and added more uncertainty to recent reporting about one of the most powerful men in Congress and whether or not he actually delivered a speech to Duke’s European-American Unity and Rights Organization (EURO).
EURO has been classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
“Frankly, I’m not sure,” Duke said when Smerconish asked him point-blank whether or not Scalise spoke to the group he founded. “I was in Russia at the time doing research for my doctoral dissertation.”
Yes, white supremacists apparently get doctorates.
Duke confirmed that, since the story broke about Scalise’s appearance or non-appearance at a EURO convention, he has picked up the phone and contacted key players to determine whether or not the U.S. Representative was in attendance as a speaker.
“I’ve gotten conflicting reports,” he said. “One person said that he was a no-show, that he was scheduled to come. Another person said that he did come. I mean, I just don’t know what the truth is. It seems that Mr. Scalise thinks that he may have. That’s why he’s covering himself.”
In fact, Scalise has publicly apologized for the speech he delivered. However, that’s not good enough for curious reporters, some of whom think that he might have just spoke to a group of people who happened to be at the same venue as the EURO meeting on the date in question.
Duke went on to say that if Scalise had spoke to La Raza, an immigration activist group, then nobody would be complaining. He said that’s a double standard because the name “La Raza” literally means “The Race” when translated into English. The group places a particular emphasis on protecting the interests of Latinos who have come to the United States.
Interestingly enough, Duke also said that he didn’t have a problem with La Raza, telling Smerconish that all people have a right to support their heritage.
