Fox Studios is producing a remake of the John Carpenter cult classic, Escape From New York.
The original film from 1981 starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a rough-and-tumble antihero sent into Manhattan, which has been converted into a high-security prison island, to save the President of the United States. The film also co-starred Isaac Hayes, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasance as the President. That original story was set in the then-futuristic world of 1997, so needless to say the Escape From New York remake is expected to be much further in the future.
Both Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy and Chris Hemsworth have been rumored to star in the remake. This is not the first time an Escape From New York remake has been in the works, as back in 2007 a remake was getting traction with European actor Gerard Butler. Russell voiced his displeasure with Butler being cast in the main role back in 2007.
“I will say that when I was told who was going to play Snake Plissken,” Ruseel said, “my initial reaction was ‘Oh, man’ [Russell winces]. I do think that character was quintessentially one thing. And that is, American.”
That remake fell through, and the project has floated around until now. Actors like Jeremy Renner, Tom Hardy, and Jason Statham were reportedly attached to the project at certain points, but none of those came to fruition.
There have been no other details regarding director, writer, or other people who might be joining the cast. John Carpenter is serving as executive producer on the Escape From New York remake, and Fox Studios hope to kickstart a new franchise with this remake. Russell also portrayed Snake Plissken in 1996’s sequel to the original, Escape From L.A., which did not become quite as much of a cult classic as the original.
