Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has advised his children that learning to cook is more important than passing school exams.
The restaurateur and reality show star said that he recently told his 15-year-old son Jack to quit stressing over a Latin exam and just concentrate on improving his culinary skills.
The outspoken (and often foul-mouthed) chef also blamed the current childhood obesity epidemic on parents and not the children themselves.
“I’m fed up with kids getting blamed for this obesity epidemic and bad eating habits. It’s not the kids, it’s the parents,” he said during an interview on David Letterman’s Late Show.
Ramsay also recounted how he promotes a “cooking über alles” message within the family.
“Cooking is now a proper life skill for the young kids,” he said. “I look at my son Jack and he’s stressing out over Latin. I’m saying to him ‘Mate, if you’re not going to use Latin for the rest of your life, don’t worry about that exam, follow dad, let me show you how to make scrambled eggs.'”
“The good news is that now, every Saturday or Sunday, our four kids cook for us,” Ramsay said. “I’ve got them up to speed and they’re bloody good cooks.’
He also said that the importance of cooking was taught to him at a very early age from his mother, who was a chef herself.
“Mum worked in a little tea house called the Cobweb Tea Room – it was packed with Americans and she was cooking classic English food,” he said.
Ramsay also reminisced about how much more character young people had in the past.
“Back in those days it was rude to leave anything so you ate and washed up straight afterwards,” he said. “Today you have issues with kids even loading the dishwasher.”
Ramsay’s 13-year-old daughter, Matilda, will soon have her own cooking show called Matilda and the Ramsay Bunch. In that show, she’ll travel to Los Angeles to create dishes for Bollywood themed parties. She also get a chance to ride a zip line and visit the beach.
Ramsay also has two other daughers, Megan and Holly, as well as a wife of almost 20 years, Cayetana.
