Is This Really The Whitest Oscars In 20 Years? Twitter Reacts

This year’s Oscars may be the whitest in nearly 20 years, and some people have already shown their disgust following this morning’s list of nominations.

This was a big year for English biopic films such as The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game, but this year’s snubs are led by Selma, the civil rights drama about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Last year’s Oscars was a big win for people of color with 12 Years A Slave being awarded the best film and Lupita Nyong’o receiving the best supporting actress award, but the 2015 Oscars might be a step back in terms of diversity.

The 2015 Oscars will be the whitest in nearly two decades, and it is the first time since 1998 that at least one of the four acting categories did not contain at least one person of color.

Many people thought that Selma could be a potential frontrunner heading into the Oscar race, but after both actor David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay were snubbed, the film only received two nominations, one for best picture, and one for original song.

Despite the fact that Oyelowo and DuVernay may not have the best chance at winning the awards, the fact that they were not nominated says something, and it has been highly criticized and questioned since the announcement.

Following a similar situation at the Golden Globes, some people thought that the film may get redemption with several nominations at the Oscars. In addition to Selma, there were several potentially big films starring people of color that were ignored for the most part as well such as Top Five, Rosewater, Beyond The Lights, Annie, and Belle.

Selma‘s snubs are particularly troubling due to the fact that historical dramas are typically popular with the Academy. Films that focus on an important time of American history such as a president or leader usually do well, although this situation is also similar to last year’s treatment of Lee Daniels’ The Butler.

The 2015 Oscars could be the whitest Oscars in nearly 20 years with its major snub of Selma and other minor films that could have received attention as well. Another important thing to note in this year’s Oscars is the fact that no women were nominated for directing, screenwriting, or cinematography awards.
