John Fox is out as head coach of the Denver Broncos.
The move comes just one day after the Broncos lost to the Indianapolis Colts at a home AFC playoff game. During that game, numerous Broncos fans could be heard booing their own team because of its lackluster performance.
The decision will come as a surprise to many because Fox enjoyed an outstanding record with Broncos. He took the team to the playoffs four years in a row. He led them to the Super Bowl just last season. Overall, his record with the franchise is 46-18.
Although the team made it to the Super Bowl last year, the Broncos were walloped by the Seattle Seahawks in a game that wasn’t even competitive. That performance could have factored into team management’s decision to cut Fox loose.
The 59-year-old coach also led his former team, the Carolina Panthers, to the Super Bowl once. Unfortunately, he lost that game as well.
“I am eager to continue my coaching career and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead,” Fox said in a statement.
Apparently Fox is not the only member of the coaching staff that will be leaving the Broncos. Other members of the staff, including the well-respected offensive coordinator Adam Gase, were notified they should “look elsewhere,” according to NFL Network.
The changes signal more than just a coaching change, but a major transition that is underway with the franchise.
It should be noted that Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has signaled that he might not even be with the team — or possibly not even with the NFL — as of next season.
When asked if he would return to the Denver Broncos, Peyton Manning said: “Uh, yeah, I guess I just can’t give that simple answer. I’m processing it. I can’t say that. I could not say that.”
