Melissa Benoist has landed the title role on the new series Supergirl, which is set to air on the CBS network. The superhero TV shows are getting more popular all the time, and will join Gotham, The Flash, Constantine, and Arrow in the lineup of DC shows.
She has become a breakout star over the past year after having a co-starring role in the Oscar-nominated Whiplash. In the film, she played the young woman that the main character dated briefly.
In addition to Whiplash, Benoist is known for her role as Marley Rose on Glee. She has multiple films yet to be released including Danny Collins and The Longest Ride, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel.
Melisa Benoist has been cast in Supergirl, and while she may not be known to the average comic book fan, Supergirl was an iconic part of the DC universe. The show will feature Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago.
Much like her Superman, she arrives on Earth and is raised by a foster family. She grew up with the Danvers, helping her to control her extraordinary abilities which she shares with Superman. However, an unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public. After that, she proceeds to embrace her abilities and help the people of the city, as Superman and every other superhero tend to do.
Benoist previously wore a superhero costume during an episode of Glee for the song “Holding Out For A Hero.”
Melissa Benoist was one of many actresses to test for the role of Supergirl, and she beat out Claire Holt, known for The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, as well as other rising stars for the coveted role.
With Supergirl being on CBS, it now means that there will soon be a superhero-themed show on every broadcast network channel. This includes Constantine on NBC, Gotham on FX, The Flash and Arrow on CW, and Agents of SHIELD on ABC. Additionally, Netflix has Daredevil and three other series’ coming up, setting up a miniseries to connect them all together.
