Oscar Nominations 2015: Biggest Snubs And Surprises

selmadavid

The nominations for the 2015 Oscars were revealed this morning, and while many were predicted easily, there were several snubs and surprises as usual.

The nominations are led by Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel, receiving nine each, followed by The Imitation Game with eight, and American Sniper and Boyhood, which both received six.

Of course there are going to be snubs and surprises when it comes to any award show, but this year’s Oscars has some big ones, most notably in the best actor and best director category.

Snub: David Oyelewo for Best Actor (Selma)

The Oscars will typically go for historical dramas, and Selma seemed to be a frontrunner going into the 2015 Oscars. However, the film came away with only two nominations this morning, including director Ava DuVernay being left out as well.

Snub: Jake Gyllenhaal for Best Actor (Nightcrawler)

Although the film has not received a ton of attention overall, Gyllenhaal’s performance has been praised highly by critics and he was already nominated for a Golden Globe, SAG Award, and BAFTA for his role in the film as the creepy video journalist. Last week’s BAFTA nominations gave the film four nominations, while it seemed to be nonexistent with Academy voters.

Snub: Clint Eastwood for Best Director (American Sniper)

Clint Eastwood has been a major part of film and awards show for as long as some people can remember, and although his film was nominated for best picture, he was not nominated for best director.

Snub: The Lego Movie for Best Animated Feature

The film recently lost the Golden Globe award, but at least it was nominated. Many people would tell you that it was the best animated film of 2014, and it was also the biggest box office hit of the year, and it was popular with audiences of all ages.

Snub: Jennifer Aniston for Best Actress (Cake)

Her performance has been seen by hardly anyone in the public yet, but some critics have praised it as one of the best acting performances of the year. It was a completely different role for the veteran of the comedy genre, and although her awards campaign landed her Golden Globe and SAG nominations, it was not enough to bait the Oscars.

Surprise: Bradley Cooper for Best Actor (American Sniper)

It is not a huge surprise to see Bradley Cooper nominated for best actor given that he has been all over the awards scene in recent years, and nominated in the past two Oscars, but this does mark his first nomination for American Sniper. The film has received some controversy, and has even been called “anti-american” due to the way it addresses war veteran Chris Kyle.

In summary, the 2015 Oscars’ snubs and surprises will leave a lot of people wondering. Other notable additions that could be added to the list, but perhaps will not be as buzzed about would be Marion Cotillard receiving the best actress nomination for Two Days, One Night and Amy Adams being left out for Big Eyes, which she just won a Golden Globe for.

Another important thing to note is the news surrounding American Sniper, and while the Academy voters seemed to like it with the Bradley Cooper nomination, it was ignored in the best director category for the veteran Clint Eastwood. Can you think of anything else that should have been nominated that wasn’t or any surprises that you didn’t see coming?
