A former Baltimore policeman and homicide detective, also now the senior security director of the Baltimore Ravens – Darren Sanders was charged with a fourth-degree sex offense that occurred on Dec.14. He is summoned to the hearing in the case that is scheduled on Feb. 9th, according to the court records.
In 2004, Sanders was charged with bringing a concealed pistol into an Atlantic Coast Conference tournament game in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he was shot in the hip when the gun accidentally fired. Earlier this year, Sanders was brought under scrutiny over the Ray Rice saga over which he led the investigation.
He was kept under scrutiny for lack of investigative effort as the controversy heated up on whether the Ravens were able to obtain security camera footage showing Rice punching his then-fiancée Janay Palmer in an elevator at a New Jersey casino.
Sanders is said to have asked Atlantic City, New Jersey, Police and the Revel Casino Hotel for the surveillance video but the officer simply relayed the information to him in detail as per what he was seeing. This notorious domestic violence case had caused Rice to be suspended indefinitely and had blown up into one of NFL’s biggest scandals in its 94-year history, till he finally won the appeal and was reinstated by NFL. The Baltimore Ravens tumultuous year is apparently not over yet.
The elements of a basic fourth degree sexual offense include intentionally touching another person in an intimate way without their consent. The offense is punishable by a maximum $1,000 fine and/or a year in jail.
Other sources such as the Baltimore Police Department have been tightlipped about the undergoing investigation and refused to comment. The lawyer Andrew Alperstein told the Baltimore Sun the charges were “totally fabricated” and the Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne told the Sun in a statement, “We are aware of the situation and have been investigating thoroughly.”
It is yet unclear whether Sanders was convicted under this offense.
