Sunday on Fox & Friends, Rep. Louie Gohmert formally announced that he will challenge Rep. John Boehner for Speaker of the House.
The announcement occurred following Rep. Ted Yoho’s announcement on Saturday that he would also challenge Speaker Boehner.
Gohmert told host Tucker Carlson that it’s “hogwash” to think that multiple Republicans entering the race for Speaker would lead to Rep. Nancy Pelosi being elected. He made it clear that the rules state that the winner must a receive a majority of the vote. The only way that Pelosi could win a majority, he said, is if 59 Republicans vote “present.”
Gohmert also said that Boehner is dihonest.
“You deceived us,” he said, speaking as someone who was talking to the Speaker, “when you went to Obama and Pelosi to get your votes for the Cromnibus. You said you’d fight amnesty tooth and nail. You didn’t. You funded it. And then you took the only hostage that Obama would like for us to shoot. It was a terrible strategy and it follows a number of years of broken promises.”
Gohmert also cited a Caddell Associates Poll, released on Friday, showing that 60% of Republicans would prefer “someone else” (i.e., someone other than Boehner) as Speaker of the House.
He also cited another poll showing that 25% of Republicans are “ready to walk” if there aren’t some serious changes within the party.
Gohmert said that, strategically, he needs 29 Republicans in the House to support somebody other than Boehner for Speaker, then there will be another run-off. That election would lead to a new Speaker.
When asked how he would be a different Speaker than Boehner, Gohmert replied: “Well, first of all, we will fight amnesty tooth and nail. We will use the powers of the purse. We’ll have better oversight. We’ll fight to defund ObamaCare.”
He went to say that he’ll have “positive solutions” and allow members enough time to read bills before voting on them.
