Former Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin has publicly defended posting a photograph of her son Trig standing on a dog.
On New Year’s Day, Palin posted a photo of the boy, 6-years old with Down Syndrome, standing on the pet. That sparked outrage from a number of people, predominantly critics of Palin’s politics.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), no friend to Palin because of her love of hunting, was among the outraged. That group released a statement reading in part: “It’s odd that anyone — let alone a mother — would find it appropriate to post such a thing, with no apparent sympathy for the dog in the photo.”
There are few things that Palin loves more than a good fight. She was up for this one.
“At least Trig didn’t eat the dog.”
That’s how she began her Facebook post responding to her critics.
“Did you go as crazy when your heroic Man-of-Your-Lifetime, Barack Obama, revealed he actually enjoyed eating dead dog meat?” she asked.
The question is rooted in reality. In his book, Dreams of My Father, President Obama has admitted to eating dog meat as a child in Indonesia.
Obama even mocked his own history of eating dog with a reference to Palin at the 2012 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. He told the following joke: “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? A pit bull is delicious.”
Palin also pointed out an inconsistency among her detractors. She asked why PETA never attacked Ellen DeGeneres for an Instagram photo posted last July of a child standing on her dog to brush her teeth.
Palin also wrote that she and her family love all of their pets.
“Our pets, including Trig’s best buddy Jill Hadassah, are loved, spoiled and cared for more than some people care for their fellow man whose politics may not mesh with nonsensical liberally failed ways or don’t fit your flighty standards,” she wrote.
Palin pointed out that she and PETA do agree on one thing: “respecting God’s creation and critters.”
Neither PETA nor Ellen DeGeneres have, as of this writing, responded to Palin’s post.
