‘Taken 3′ Tops Box Office In Opening Weekend

Taken 3 has topped the box office yet again, and opened with big results in its debut. The film boasted an opening weekend of $40.4 million, which was much more than what had been predicted.

The film stars Liam Neeson in the role of a government agent who is continually forced out of retirement due to his daughter being kidnapped, although in the third installment, his ex-wife is killed, prompting him to take revenge.

It has been stated that Taken 3 will be the last of the series, but the franchise has become very popular and people are continually going to see Neeson reprise his role as Bryan Mills.

In comparison with Taken 3‘s box office numbers, the second film in the series earned $49.5 million in 2012, while the first film made $24.7 million in 2009. The latest release also became the second-highest January debut of all time, behind Ride Along, which made $41.5 million.

In its debut, Taken 3 was able to dethrone The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies, which had been the reigning box office champion since its release on December 17th, 2014. The final Hobbit film dropped to fourth place after earning only $9.4 million, bringing its domestic total to $236.5 million.

Coming in second place at this week’s box office was Selma, the civil rights drama centered on Martin Luther King Jr. The film earned roughly $11.2 million after expanding from 22 to 2,179 theaters this weekend. The film could have even more success following the Oscar nominations on Thursday.

The Disney musical Into The Woods featuring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Johnny Depp brought in $9.8 million to obtain the third place position. The successful weekend also brought the film’s total to $105.3 million.

Is anyone surprised at the success that Taken 3 had at this week’s box office? How long will it take for a new film to take over? Theaters are currently filled with award-nominated films, although they are not always the biggest in terms of box office numbers.
