The X-Files To Return? The Popular Sci-Fi Series Picked Up By Fox

The X-Files could be making a return with series creator Chris Carter taking the lead. Executives are also in talks with Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny to reprise their roles as Agent Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. The show is expected to be picked up by Fox network, and a time frame is currently being discussed. There appears, though, to be scheduling conflicts as Carter, Anderson, and Duchovny are all currently wrapped up in their own projects. The biggest hurdle right now is determining a time frame when all three are available.

The X-Files ran from 1993 to 2000 and became a sci-fi phenomenon that popularized the genre of ufology and cryptozoology. Many shows also tried to imitate its success, such as the short-lived Freaky Links, which ran for one season. The show Millennium, also created by Carter, utilized a similar sci-fi/horror genre as X-Files but only achieved moderate success.

The X-Files did end on somewhat of a cliffhanger, and Carter tried to give fans a satisfying conclusion to the series with The X-Files movie I Want to Believe, released in 2008. The film, unfortunately, was poorly received by critics with many fans feeling the movie did injustice to their beloved series.

A return of The X-Files in a television series format, though, may just give fans hope of a conclusion that they can be content with. Such a return could prove to be successful, such as the case with Fox network’s other big TV hit series 24, which returned for a 9th season last year after a four-year hiatus.

The entire series of The X-Files has also been recently released on Netflix and has been performing quite well on the streaming service.

For now, a possible reboot is just speculation, though it’s good to know that the Fox network is trying to make it happen. One thing for sure, though, is that fans will only be interested if BOTH Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny reprise their roles. The latter was absent in the show’s final season and was replaced by Robert Patrick (best known as T-1000 from Terminator 2).

For fans that relished the show’s paranormal premise, they can only keep their fingers crossed that Fox can make an X-Files return into a reality.
