Square Enix’s upcoming Final Fantasy XIV patches will be sure to provide new content in addition to throwbacks to past beloved titles.
Patch 2.5 which is expected to be released within the next month will be providing the beginning of the end of the main-story content, entitled “Before the Fall”. In addition to story, this upcoming Final Fantasy XIV patch will introduce a few new dungeons and more content for the 24-player raid, The Crystal Tower which itself is a throwback to FFIII. The last part of this raid, The World of Darkness, will be included in this update.
Although no release date is set for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV patch 2.51, it will be a big one that fans have been waiting a long time for. This update will be introducing the Gold Saucer amusement park made famous in FFVII, and will include Chocobo racing and breeding, and Final Fantasy VIII’s Triple Triad card game.

To finish up the “Before the Fall” story line, Square Enix will be releasing that patch sometime in March. No release date is set for that, nor are any other details.
In addition to the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV patches, the first official expansion pack, Heavensward, is expected to be released early 2015 sometime. This massive update will allow players to create a character from an entirely new race, the Au Ra, new jobs – Dark Knight, Astrologian, and Machinist, and tons of other content. Heavensward will have new raids, game fixes and balances, new mounts, personal airships, and more.

Square Enix recently released their annual report, and it mentioned how important MMORPGs are to the livelihood of the developer. It’s clear that FFXIV, since its rebirth, has become one of their biggest hits in recent years, so it only makes sense to focus so much on upcoming Final Fantasy XIV patches, which always have new content and fixes.
