Ricky Gervais took some time to make fun of Hollywood celebrities during a speech he gave at Sunday’s Golden Globes.
The comedian was chosen to present the award for Best Actress in a Comedy of Musical. As is typically the case with all awards presenters, he was given a few minutes to tell some jokes.
When Ricky Gervais tells jokes at the Golden Globes, some celebrities are known to hide under the table. That’s because there are no sacred cows with Gervais. He’ll mock anyone, no matter how famous.
His speech at last night’s ceremony was no exception.
“It’s going well, isn’t it?” Gervais said, with a glass of wine in his hand. “Let’s not ruin it… by me saying anything, really.”
That’s all he needed to say to get the audience laughing.
“No one wants to see me insult any of you rich, beautiful, over-privileged celebrities,” he continued, as he motioned out to the crowd.
“So, no ordinary people want to see that,” Gervais said, while laughing. “Because you’re better than ordinary people. And you know it and they know it deep down.”
Then, he reminded some of them of their sordid past.
“So, I’m not going to start picking on things that you’ve done,” he said. “Some of the immoral. A lot of it illegal.”
He pointed to a few members of the audience, but it’s not clear from the camera angle who he was pointing to.
At that point, the sound was cut for a second or so. It’s not clear if someone in the audience uttered an expletive or something else was said.
“If we’ve learned one thing, it’s that famous people are above the law,” Gervais said. “As it, as it should be.”
“So, I’m not going to go over the terrible things that you’ve done to get here,” he continued, naming names.
