Sometimes, it can be tough to stay on track when you’re running a business. During those times, a little motivation is necessary. And who better to give advice than those who make careers out of staying on track (and in the fast lane): NASCAR drivers.
Explore these five inspirational quotes from different NASCAR racers, and use them to help your business grow.
- “You can’t let one bad moment spoil a bunch of good ones.” — Dale Earnhardt Sr.
It doesn’t matter how much success you enjoy early on. At some point, a moment will come when you and your team begin to doubt everything you’ve achieved. Don’t be deterred in those moments, and don’t give up on your goals. Have confidence in your strategy and dedication — and in knowing that you’ve worked many late nights to reach this point. Life is often a series of failures that teach us how to be successful. Use failures and achievements as motivation to propel you further.
- “You may be leading, then you might be at the back of the pack trying to work your way up. It’s just a constant reminder not to give up and to know that God, in my mind, is really in control.” — Jeff Gordon
The moment you achieve what you originally set out to do is the moment you need to set a new goal. Don’t be afraid to enjoy success, but don’t rest on your laurels, either. When you stop innovating and stop challenging the status quo, you fall — hard and fast. To stay at the top of the mountain, achieving success isn’t enough; you must continue to pursue it.
- “We all get so caught up in the moment of what we’re doing every day. It’s hard to hit that reset button and get pulled away from all that and see life from a different perspective.” — Tony Stewart
Keep pushing for new victories, but be careful not to get burnt out. Sometimes, it’s important to take a break and hit the reset button on your body and mind. Don’t feel guilty about it — working long hours and focusing on the same problems every day can blind you to new solutions. Come back feeling rested and rejuvenated, and maybe you’ll see new solutions to old problems.
- “We needed to win. No matter how much you try to keep it together and all the things you talk about, you need to win so you don’t have to hear those whispers anymore. Now, we can concentrate on winning some more and concentrate on the next round.” — Kevin Harvick
There will always be talk, whether it’s from competition or friends and family. Not everyone believes in your business all the time, and that’s OK; don’t get discouraged. Instead, focus on your goals, and keep striving to achieve them. Create your definition of success, stick to it, and work for what’s important to you. When you do that, all of the doubters will fade into the background.
- “I think we knew in our hearts we could do this all along.” — Jimmie Johnson
Sometimes, just telling your teammates they can achieve something isn’t enough. To get the most out of your employees, help them believe they can succeed. Everyone responds differently to different forms of motivation. As the leader, it’s your job to learn — and to provide — what inspires each member of your team.
I know I have several personalities to motivate every day. I might be more serious with some team members and more laid-back with others. It’s never been about being buddies; it’s about bringing out the best in each member of my team.
Keep these principles close to heart and continue working hard, and you’ll be rewarded. Once you reach the top of the mountain, remember the people who helped get you there, and relish your shared success with them.
Don’t relish it for too long, though! Remember: There’s always another mountain to climb.
