Conversations about appropriate compensation and jobs continue to pop up in politics this year. California Gov. Jerry Brown recently announced his state would raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2022, and New York legislators are looking at a similar proposal. GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump often promises he’ll “bring jobs back from China,” and Democratic candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders continues to argue for a federal minimum wage of $15 per hour.
With Americans’ paychecks such a hot topic, Graphiq politics site InsideGov decided to examine the salaries of government employees. Using 2014 data from FedsDataCenter.com, which collects public information from various government agencies, InsideGov ranked the 25 highest-paid government employees. In the event of a tie, we’ve listed people alphabetically.
We have complete information on 22 of the 25 people on this list. Of those 22 people, one is a woman.
With the exception of three individuals stationed in the Army Medical Command, this list is made up of health care workers throughout the United States in the Veterans Health Administration, which is part of the Department of Veterans Affairs. In 2014, the Veterans Health Administration came under scrutiny for long wait times at its Phoenix facility that impeded access to medical care. News outlets reported that at least 40 veterans died while waiting for medical care. None of the people who made this list of top earners were stationed in Phoenix.
InsideGov also compiled data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics on the average salaries for similar professions in each state to provide a bit of context on how these salaries compare to those of people employed by the government. We used the closest comparable data classifications for each position, meaning that salaries for surgeons on our list of government employees are compared to the average salary for a surgeon in a specific state. Per BLS data, radiologists and cardiovascular disease doctors are classified as “physicians and surgeons, all other”; people who practice internal medicine are classified as an “internist.” We used averages from those classifications for comparison, when applicable.
Since the cost of living varies greatly throughout the country, we’ve included state-specific numbers from the Economic Policy Institute’s Family Budget Calculator for that tally, too. The average U.S. family is calculated at 2.5 members, so we accounted for two adults and one child in our cost of living figures.
* Note: This list does not include people on the five-tiered executive pay schedule, which includes the president and people in appointed positions within the executive branch (like members of the Cabinet). Therefore, President Barack Obama, who makes $400,000 per year, is not included on this list.
