Amazon announced a new program called Kindle Matchbook on Tuesday. The program allows users to buy cheap e-copies of books that have already been bought in paperback or hardcover before. The Kindle Matchbook program will begin in October and will sell copies for $2.99, $1.99, $0.99 cents per copy, or for free.
Matchbook will be including purchases from 1995, when Amazon launched, and by October will carry about 10,000 titles. The program is limited in the titles available, since Amazon carries hundreds of thousands of books, but boasts authors such as Ray Bradbury, Michael Crichton, James Rollins, Neil Gaiman, and many more.
As the Atlantic points out, although the deal may seem cheap and affordable it isn’t the case when considering the normal price of e-books. Most e-books are under $10 and a large portion of best sellers is under the $3 price tag that Matchbook offers. Although the program may seem cheap, the price of e-books is generally cheaper than the prices offered by the Kindle Matchbook. However, the appeal for this program is more so for avid readers who want to enjoy the comfort of an e-book and still maintain the aesthetics of a full bookshelf.
