“I can’t believe it’s already Thanksgiving,” we’ll all say in three weeks… quickly followed by, “I can’t believe it’s already Christmas,” three weeks later. One more week and it’s New Year’s and… wait! … Where did 2013 go?!
Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. So, take these six steps now to winter-proof your brand’s content. Listen, if you’re the one who takes care of all your company’s content marketing, you’ll thank me come mid-December. And if you have an employee or intern running your blog posts and social media accounts, trust me, they’ll appreciate this work-ahead strategy, too.
#1 Crank up the posts. We like to think technology happens in a bubble. It doesn’t. The most natural of things – the weather – still affects when and how we use technology. As days get shorter and temperatures drop, more people are likely to choose Facebook and a mug of cocoa for an evening in. Will your brand be there to meet the increased demand for content?
#2 Create a backlog. In my experience, people aren’t too fond of working on Thanksgiving. Or the day before. Or the day after. In fact, there are a lot of days like that coming up in the next few weeks. Create a backlog of Tweets, blog posts, and links to share so that the good content marketing folks in your company can really take off and enjoy the holidays.
#3 Short on ideas? Repurpose content. You probably have at least one past idea that’s pure gold. Your audience loves it. Take a tip from HubSpot and repurpose the heck out of your content.
#4 Pull out the garlands. It might be a little late to launch a full-scale holiday-themed campaign. But that doesn’t mean you can’t decorate what you’ve got with some holly and mistletoe. Heidi Cohen covers all this in considerable depth. Her article is a must read!
#5 Prepare to score 2014 leads. Not a lot of deals are sealed in late December. But, as everyone settles back into the office in January, many companies will make a fresh start. Perhaps you’re thinking of a few leads or prospects right now that could be ready to buy in early 2014. Start strategizing now about the content you might use to connect with them in a few months.
#6 Don’t miss out on mobile. Okay, I said it might be late for a holiday campaign, but it’s never too late to cobble together a fun Instagram campaign. Mark Cooper is full of ideas for how you can create a holiday-themed mobile campaign that gets traffic. (If you’ve done a campaign like this in the past, here’s an easy opportunity to repurpose content.)
