One of the best ways to showcase your professional expertise on LinkedIn is to make use of the site’s “Professional Portfolio” offering. This feature allows you to add your published content—blog posts, guest articles, Slideshare decks, etc.—directly to your profile, where it becomes a permanent part of your online résumé.
This feature has been available since mid-2013, but many professionals have yet to use it to its full advantage. Perhaps this is because each portfolio entry has to be made by hand, whereas other options like simple status updates and group posts can be done using social media automation software. However, the time spent adding content to the portfolio section is well worth it in the long run.
Why You Need an Optimized LinkedIn Portfolio
A few reasons you should consider building up your LinkedIn portfolio:
It adds value and credibility to your profile. Anyone can call themselves an expert, but few have the proof to back up the claim. Adding your best content pieces affirms your expertise in your industry.
It highlights your best work. Just like with any type of portfolio, you want to show off your best pieces. The LinkedIn portfolio section allows you to do just that, fitting five media pieces comfortably for each professional position.
It drives traffic back to your content. Unlike a status update, a portfolio addition is permanent. People looking at your profile will be able to access it over and over again.
It provides another layer of visibility. Adding a piece of content with a fully optimized title and description adds SEO value to your LinkedIn profile. People searching for the keywords you use could potentially find your profile.
How to Add Content to Your Portfolio in Six Steps
Go to your LinkedIn profile and click the “Edit Profile” button. You can also hover over the “Profile” tab in the top navigation and click “Edit Profile” in the drop-down menu.
Scroll down to the “Experience” section and find the position for which you want to add a piece of content.
Click the blue icon next to the position title that looks like a box with a plus sign on it. A drop-down menu will appear asking if you would like to add a link or upload a file. If your content is linked somewhere, like on a blog, choose the link option. If your content is not published online and is instead stored on your computer, choose the file option.
If you choose the link option, a box will appear asking for the URL. Paste the full URL of your published content here. If the link works, the fields should automatically generate a title, description, and an image based on the meta information on the link. Edit this as you see fit.
If you choose the file upload option, choose the file from your computer. Once done uploading, the fields should automatically generate a title based on the file’s name. Edit this and add a description as you see fit.
Click “Save” when finished and make sure to scroll back to the top of your profile to click the blue “Save & Exit” button to record your new changes.
Important Portfolio Aspects to Remember
LinkedIn will automatically add your newest addition to the end of your list. To move your blog or article to a different position, simply click its box and drag it to where you want it to be. The sizing of the box will automatically update.
In order to make the most of the visual aspect of this portfolio, be sure to use eye-catching images in your blogs, articles, and presentations. This will ensure your portfolio is visually appealing and engaging.
The descriptions you add to your content show up when a user clicks on that content from your profile. If you do not include a description, someone clicking on your content might not be compelled to click through to the original article, which is essentially your end goal. Additionally, no description means no keywords means no added SEO value. It’s a lose-lose!
Remember that your portfolio is for showcasing your best work and not necessarily for posting everything you’ve ever written. Leverage your regular content within LinkedIn groups you’ve joined and reserve your portfolio spaces for those pieces that really shine.
