X-Men: Apocalypse is seeing a familiar face who may not remember the events from X-Men: First Class. Rose Byrne is confirmed to be reprising her previous role as CIA agent Moira MacTaggert in Bryan Singer’s upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. Writer and producer Simon Kinberg revealed the news in an interview with EW, saying her character’s return is a key part of the film:

Previously, media outlets have reported that Alexandra Shipp will play Storm, Sophie Turner will play Jean Grey, and Tye Sheridan will play Cyclops. Kinberg spoke about Byrne’s involvement.

“She’s a significant character in the movie. We ended First Class with Charles having wiped portions of her memory of her experience with the X-Men. They are, essentially, strangers to her when she meets them. It’s certainly a rich relationship that we started to dig into in First Class, and would like to mine more in this one.”

He also said the script will further development the relationship between Charles Xavier and Moira. This plot will essentially tie up the trilogy started with First Class:

“[Apocalypse] is the completion of the first arcs of Charles, Eric, Raven, and Hank, who are essentially our main characters. They’re such young actors and young characters, so there’s a lot more story to tell. But as a first phase of their lives, there is this feeling of closure by the end of the movie.”

Kinberg also spoke about the rumors of a crossover with the rebooted Fantastic Four universe. With that film’s trailer having now been revealed (seen below), Kinberg said the option is still possible and quite open for sometime in the near future:

“The reboot of FanFour really needed to work in and of itself. We were doing something pretty radical with the tone of the movie. If we wanted to find a way to connect them to the X-Men, we could. There’s a lot of precedent from the comics.”

Finally, Kinberg talked about the possibility of the disco-themed mutant Dazzler appearing in ‘Apocalypse’ saying it could happen, and that they’re looking at mutants that fit the 1980s period of the film as they want to heavily integrate that aesthetic into the movie.

Byrne is also joining James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac and Nicholas Hoult in X-Men: Apocalypse, coming to theaters on May 27, 2016. What do you think of Byrne’s involvement in the X-Men sequel?
