Senior Ryan Arcidiacono of Villanova was honored as the Most Outstanding Player of the 2016 NCAA Tournament following the Wildcats’ thrilling 77-74 triumph over North Carolina in the finals. One might think being honored as the best player in college basketball’s premier display of talent would guarantee NBA success. In reality, however, Arcidiacono seems destined to join the list of 10 other former MOPs to fall short of realizing their NBA dreams.
Of the 61 other MOPs who did make it to the NBA, which ones enjoyed the most success? PointAfter, a sports data visualization site powered by the Graphiq network, ranked those players by their level of impact in the professional ranks. PointAfter relied heavily on win shares, a statistic meant to roughly measure how many wins a player contributed in the NBA. However, All-Star appearances, win shares per season and various awards and records were also taken into account.
All in all, 26 MOPs went on to play in at least one All-Star Game and 13 were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as an NBA player — though a couple more active players could join them in the future.
