Gotham recently aired its episode, “What That Little Bird Told Him” where the Penguin played by Robin Lord Taylor achieved a huge win against Fish Mooney who has wanted his character dead for quite some time. Taylor spoke to IGN about his moment of triumph and where things may go from here. Here are some highlights:
On how The Penguin feels on his vicotry
“Of course he feels incredible. It’s a huge, successful moment for him. He’s definitely enjoying it, but he’s also not stupid, as we know. He’s always looking 10 steps ahead. So he’s not one to count her out. So he’ll take a moment to enjoy it, but at the same time, he knows that Gotham City is a place where, if you’re not on your game all the time, there’s someone underneath you who’s ready to come right up and take your place. Also, he knows Fish Mooney better than anyone almost. He knows that she’s not just going to lay down and die and let this go.”
On counting Fish Mooney out
“Oh, I think you should definitely expect her to make a play for some power. I think if anyone counted her out, it’d would just be so out of character for what we’ve established. She’s such a strong personality in Gotham City. Also, it’s been alluded to in previous episodes, and you can only imagine the kind of stuff she had to do and go through to get to where she was at the beginning of this series. This is chicken scratch; it’s nothing. She’s been through hard stuff in the past. You can only imagine. What does it take to be a female crime boss? I can’t imagine what she’s done. So yeah, I think to count her out would be a major disservice.”
On a friendship between The Penguin and James Gordon
“I don’t even think he would take Jim out. I don’t think he would. Well, ultimately, if it came down to him or Jim I think he would have to, but it would be a really difficult thing for him, because I do think he really likes Jim. He really wants to be his friend. He’s the only person he trusts in Gotham City, and he’s never had friends. He’s never had anyone. I think the fact that Jim saved his life is such a huge moment for him, because no one besides his mother has ever cared about him that much or ever shown him any mercy at all. I think Penguin really takes that to heart. And yet, at the same time, I think he knows he needs somebody on that side, and he’ll do whatever it takes to ingratiate himself to Jim and to make that relationship real, to actually have a friend.”
On villains he liked to play against
“Yeah. Edward Nygma. Cory Michael Smith, all the way. I’m such a huge fan of Cory’s, and I can tease that we do have a moment. Penguin and Riddler meet, coming up, which is one of my favorite things that we’ve shot in the entire series. It’s just one scene, but the dynamic between the two of them, they’re such oddballs and they’re so different from each other in the way that they’re odd, you know?”
