This year’s opening comedy routine at the Golden Globes was presented by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They did not disappoint.
“Good evening, and welcome you bunch of despicable, spoiled, minimally talented brats,” Fey said at the beginning.
Believe it or not, the audience laughed at that.
“We are so happy to be here hosting the 72nd and final Golden Globe Awards,” Poehler said.
She broke news with that announcement.
“Tonight, we celebrate all the great television shows that we know and love,” Fey said. “As well as all the movies that North Korea was okay with.”
“That’s right,” answered Poehler. “The biggest story in Hollywood this year was when North Korea threatened an attack if Sony Pictures released The Interview, forcing us all to pretend we wanted to see it.”
“North Korea referred to The Interview as ‘absolutely intolerable’ and ‘a wanton act of terror,'” Fey said. “Even more amazing: not the worst review the movie got.”
After that, the pair pointed out various stars in the audience and told brief jokes about them.
Poehler pointed out that Reese Witherspoon was in the audience and that she was “so brave” for doing “all of her own walking” for the movie Wild.
“And Andy Serkis was great as your backpack,” she said to Witherspoon.
“J.K. Simmons is here,” Fey said. “Or as Matthew McConnaughey calls him, ‘Just Keep Simmons.'”
The pair pointed out that Patricia Arquette, who stars in Boyhood, was in the audience. They said that she proves that there are still roles available for women over 40 as long as they get hired when they’re under 40.
“Joaquin Phoenix is nominated for Inherent Vice,” Fey said. “But obviously, he isn’t here tonight because he has said publicly that awards shows are ‘total and utter bullsh—'”
Then, she pointed to Phoenix in the audience and said: “Oh, hi Joaquin! There he is!”
The whole segment is filled with laughs, especially for pop culture junkies. Check out the video above for more jokes.
