The return of ‘Girls’ brings back many fan favorites but the show is not just about these women but the guys in their lives too. Back on Sunday night, Andrew Rannells says that he is happy to be a series regular for season 4 as Elijah.
“It was a really fun season to be a part of,” Rannells told ABC News. “Even though I never felt I was tagging along as a guest star … it was nice to be official.”
While shooting the new season of ‘Girls,’ Rannells was rehearsing for his latest stint on Broadway in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and shooting for a new movie “The Intern,” starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, coming out next year. He is very excited for the new season of ‘Girls’ especially with scenes of him and co-Star Lena Dunham.
“Any time I get to do party scenes with Lena, it’s the most fun ever, this season is no different,” he added. “She does indeed go to Iowa and Elijah gets to tag along with that. I’d like to say he has a little more direction this year, but not really.”
Those scenes of the two in Iowa were filmed in New York City.
“We got to go to lovely Ditmas Park which can look like Iowa, actually,” he said. “It’s a crazy neighborhood in Brooklyn … it doesn’t look like New York at all … HBO did reach out to University of Iowa, they were not so keen on having big film crews come and disrupt their campus. I can’t blame them.”
I am so proud to be a part of @girlsHBO season 4. This Sunday, January 11th, we kick things off with a jazz brunch! What could be better?!

USA Today reported that the show is about the women’s relationships with the guys in their lives that make Hannah (Lena Dunham), Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), Jessa (Jemima Kirke) and Marnie (Allison Williams) more multi-dimensional.
“I never think about the show in terms of men and women,” says executive producer Judd Apatow, himself well-versed in the vagaries of onscreen manhood. “We don’t have a guy or girl debate. We’re just trying to show every stage of how you ultimately learn your lessons or somehow don’t learn your lessons.”
All the men told USA Today that creator, producer and star Dunham puts as much thought into their storylines as she does to the ladies’ storyline. But the men said they often play small-screen second fiddle, with no complaints.
“This season, there’s as many guy regulars as there are girls,” says Alex Karpovsky, who plays volatile blowhard Ray. “There are four dudes and four girls. This show is very much about these four girls, and in many ways, the guys are ways for us to learn more about these girls and the mistakes that they make.”
