Pack Of Gum Theft Lands Idaho 9-Year-Old In A Sticky Situation

pack of gum theft

The most hardened criminal in the news today is … a 9-year-old who stole a pack of gum.

Over the weekend, an arrest warrant was issued for the Idaho tyke after he failed to appear in court twice to answer the charges. Given that the kid was, well … 9 … he couldn’t make his court date (and apparently, there was no one available to drive him). Thus, Post Falls police had no choice but to issue a warrant for the elementary school student’s arrest.

Post Falls Police Chief Scott Haug said that many stores will choose to press shoplifting charges, even for items like a pack of gum. However, the chief admitted that it’s incredibly rare for a simple shoplifting incident to reach this level of legal intervention, especially for someone as young as 9.

So rare, in fact, that Haug admitted that he has never seen an arrest warrant issued for a child that young in his 30-year career.

Though he sounded sympathetic, Haug suggested that the law would have been willing to work with the child’s family had they reached out for assistance.

“Had we known that before the court date, we would have provided something for the family,” Haug told KHQ. “I wish we would have had more information, that way we could have provided some sort of assistance.”

Currently, the gum stealing rapscallion is at the Post Falls Juvenile Detention Center awaiting an appearance before a judge.
