With his show ending, news surrounding Jon Hamm has not been pleasant. The star admitted to checking into rehab. Now, the star of Mad Men took part in a violent college hazing in 1990 at the University of Texas that led to criminal charges and to the fraternity chapter permanently disbanding, according to court and school records obtained Thursday.
Huffington Post further stated that Criminal records revealed that Hamm, now 44, was charged with hazing and received deferred adjudication, which under Texas law means he had to successfully complete probation but was never convicted. A separate charge of assault was dismissed.
According to the lawsuit, Hamm became “mad, I mean really mad” after the 20-year-old Sigma Nu pledge failed to recite things he was supposed to memorize about Hamm and other fraternity members. This past March, Hamm completed a stint in rehab for what his representatives said was treatment for alcohol addiction. Whether this affects the final season of Mad Men will be left to be seen.
In talking about the final season, Hamm told IGN that the biggest challenge over the years while playing Don Draper was, “Making him human, keeping him human. I think a lot of people in our lives can be despicable and likable and sometimes you have to work with those people, deal with those people, manage those people, handle those people in some way and you have to understand that that’s part of being a human being is sometimes being in a s**ty mood, having a bad day, having a bad week. Part of being an adult is not judging everyone immediately on their first impressions and managing the expectation there. Don has been a lot of things to a lot of people and not all of them good. And my hope for Don has always been that this incredibly talented yet incredibly troubled man would find balance in his life, would find peace in his life, and hopefully he does.”
Hamm described Don as, “A person who in many ways is very spiritually bereft and is searching for something. You see it when he goes to California and you see various versions of tarot and tealeaves and a lot of things that are — ghosts are a big thing. Flashbacks to his past are a big thing. His own mind, we see how that works and where his creativity springs from in many ways. So he might not be the most in tune with it, but he’s very aware of it and Matt’s been very capable, I think, in riding that dial to where it doesn’t get laughable, where the Swami is saying ‘Breathe deep into the thing!’ We’re not into that headspace just yet but I think that’s meaningful to a lot of people.”
The recent news is definitely as the Washington Post said “a blow to Hamm’s image. Considering he was launched to fame playing a cold and emotionally-stunted womanizer, Hamm has done a good job of convincing the world that he is not Don Draper. He’s down-to-earth and funny in interviews.” How do you feel about the recent accusations? Happy with this final season of Mad Men?
