In order to market your business to reach its full potential, there are a variety of concepts you must keep in focus. The idea of marketing has come a long way in the past decade. No longer can you rely on just gimmicks or creative logos. Your business model must be structurally sound and you must be dedicated to put in the time and effort to create a productive bottom line. Marketing will be the key to launching your business or taking your current small business and making it that big name that you aspire to be.
Marketing success will first come by paying attention to your competitors. What does your product have that theirs does not? This can be as simple as an extra safety feature, a comfort grip, or a longer warranty. A complex product can stand out even further by using better materials or being the first of its kind. Whatever it is, make sure you market that standout. Make your customers aware of the fact that your product comes with a satisfaction guarantee or that the colors in your material are more vibrant because of special dyes found in plants in the Amazon. Do not lie about your product but make sure it wins the race by being better in some way.
Once you stand out from your competitors, you need to work to rise above them. In order for your business to grow, it needs to be on the same level as your competitors or better. If you find yourself constantly on the bottom, you are not standing out from the crowd. Customers are not finding your product appealing for one reason or another. Complete market research and surveys to always know where you stand. Your biggest competitor sometimes is yourself.
Do you need to be number one? If you only have one competitor, yes. More than likely though, you will have a wide range of them so shoot to be above as many as possible within reason and always attempt to rise higher as your business grows. Not only does your product itself need to stand out but make sure your business name, company logo, customer service, website, and anything else related to your business does as well. Crayola and Roseart both sell washable markers but I can guarantee you, one stands out in your mind, possibly because of nothing else but a trusted name and reliable quality.
Long term marketing success will come from this brand that you’ve created. Once proven to be a stable, long term company, customers will remain loyal. A dedicated customer is the key to a deep future for your small business. Happy customers will tell their friends and family and will provide you with a free type of marketing, word-of-mouth. It is hard to establish this type of marketing right off the bat but with some work, your customers will repay you after a few interactions and your goal of long term marketing success will become clearer.
There are a few tricks of the trade in today’s fast paced and very internet based marketing world. If you are new to business, get these established right away so that they form the foundation of your company. If you are already in business, gradually get these in place to reach for that extra level of success that may be just out of your grasp.
- Create a memorable slogan for your company. Do not take this step lightly. Your slogan needs to be short, honest, and have meaning. For example, Maxwell House’s slogan is “Good to the last drop.” This statement not only defines the company’s coffee product but emphasizes the company’s core value. Maxwell House has even managed to interlace several aspects of their business with forms of this slogan so that just hearing “drop” as in “Drops of Good,” the community outreach program sponsored by the coffee company, or seeing an image of a drop as featured in the company’s logo under a spilling coffee cup, will trigger your memory of the company behind it all.
- Use web marketing to your advantage. Make sure your company has a working website with detailed information. This should include links to your background, your owners, your beliefs, your customer service and most importantly what you offer. Provide prices or easy links to ask for quotes. Give customers a simple way to contact you or to find an address for both mail and locating you if your business includes a storefront. Advertise on the internet. Use tools to get more hits on Google searches. Start a blog. Be aware of sites where users can review your business or your product and communicate with the writers. Do not be afraid to ask customers to “Like us on Facebook” or “Follow us on Twitter.”
Starting a small business can be a cumbersome task. Once you have that done though, it just keeps getting harder. Working to create long term success is not going to be a cake walk. Your marketing cannot slip. One year of marketing will not be enough to hold your business strong. Marketing must be an ongoing aspect of your small business and it must continue to evolve and get more creative as your business continues to grow. Set yourself up for success by focusing on the aspects of long term marketing rather than taking shortcuts or missing out on valuable advertising opportunities.
