Google has officially announced they’ll be shutting down their first ever social network, Orkut. Named after – and eventually acquired from – one of Google’s own employees, Orkut was once one of the top visited social relationship sites in India and Brazil. Although the site has been around for a decade, Orkut never fully caught on with an American audience, presumably why Google has decided to shut it down.
For those concerned about personal content, photos, community posts, etc. on Orkut, don’t fret. You can archive your Orkut profile via Google Takedown until September 30th, 2014. Once you’ve successfully saved your existing content, consider one of these three online community alternatives!
Focused on businesses looking to grow their customer base, Ning.com provides a platform on which to build your own social network. Features include email blast capabilities, sub-groups and seamless sharing to other social media sites. Best for: Small business looking to consolidate followers, community members, etc. to one online space.
Although new to the scene, Follr is quickly generating big-name users. HBO, MLS Soccer, Warner Brothers Studios and non-profits like Invisible Children are just a few heavyweights that have signed on to start communities of their own. Special features include completely customizable member profiles, user-friendly topic discussions, and a slew of privacy tools. Best for: Pretty much anyone looking to create an online community around their membership or special interest.
- Yahoo Groups
More of a glorified group-text than anything else, Yahoo! Groups specialize in email lists and Internet forums. Members can continue conversations initiated from email threads for all members to see. In addition to discussion forums Yahoo! Groups can also serve as a simple bulletin board if the group moderator chooses to be the only one allowed to post. Best for: small, feedback-focused communities such as book clubs or religious groups.
Try one of these alternative community builders and let us know what you think!
