Entrepreneurship: The Myths Debunked

Entrepreneurship: The Myths Debunked image entrepreneur 300x200For some reason, becoming an entrepreneur is more popular than it has ever been.

Whether it’s because of the Internet and its ability to over-glorify things or the fact that there are so many lazy people who think running their own business would be easier than working in an office, many people have entrepreneurship all wrong.

The truth is that being an entrepreneur is not what it’s cracked up to be. Of course, there are many benefits to running your own company or business but all of the hype it has received is unnecessary.

The myths that come along with running your own business are overwhelming and for the lazy people – entrepreneurship is certainly not for you.

The Reality

Becoming an entrepreneur has almost become overrated. Everybody wants the position, whether it’s being your own boss or raking in the dough, although many of you who have started your business are clearly still searching for the dough.

Entrepreneurship has somehow gotten confused with having a lot of money, a lot of spare time and a stress –free living environment. This is where many people have it wrong. Here are some other misconceptions that people have about running your own business:

  • You don’t have to work as hard because you are the boss.

  • You will make tons of money.

  • You can work whenever you want and have all of the free time you need.

  • Running a business will give you more time to spend with your family.

  • You can work wherever you want without having to leave your house!

While these are aspirations of many small business owners, here is the reality:

  • Because you are the boss, you are required to pick up all of the slack of anyone who isn’t doing their job. If your business has not yet gained any employees, all of the responsibility lies in you.

  • Money is almost obsolete in your first couple of months to years of running a business. In fact, you are generally putting more money in than you have. Eventually the money comes but in no way is it immediate.

  • Many of you are asking what free time is. Running your own business is a day and night activity; if something goes wrong in the wee hours of the night, you must get up to fix it or find someone who can.

  • Leaving the house is almost a must if you want to build a social circle and gain more clients. Not only are you constantly on the run, but working from home is almost impossible with how many distractions you run into.

Why People do it

So becoming an entrepreneur doesn’t sound as great as it did in the beginning, but remember why you wanted to become a business owner in the first place. Eventually, your hard work will pay and you may get to sit back and run a large corporation, but having a lot of money and not working isn’t all there is to life.

Remember the dream you held as a young entrepreneur and what you wanted to do by creating the product or services your company offers. A common goal shared by many small business owners is to please the public and offer them something that another company can’t. Owning a business can allow you to give back to the community; to provide jobs for those who are unemployed and keeping work in your local area. Don’t forget the goals you created when you first began making plans to run your own business.

Running a business may be hard work but achieving your dreams can be well worth it.
