Felicity Jones has been tapped to play the female lead in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off film. The film is set to be a stand alone film that is set in the Star Wars universe, although not much has been revealed about the film yet.
It was rumored recently that Tatiana Maslany, known for Orphan Black, had received the part, but it eventually went to Felicity Jones. There were many actresses who tried out for the part, including Rooney Mara as well, who is famous for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
The details of the film’s plot are still being kept under wraps and it is unknown if it will be connected in any way with the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens as well.
In addition to Felicity Jones’ Star Wars film with LucasFilm and Disney Studios, there is another Star Wars spin-off in the works. The film starring Felicity Jones will be directed by Gareth Edwards, while another film is in production from director Josh Trank, previously responsible for Chronicle, and the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot.
There is speculation that both films may feature the early lives of both original characters Princess Leia and Han Solo, although nothing has been confirmed yet. Aaron Paul has also been cast in the film as a possible Han Solo, although the role has not been confirmed yet.
Prior to landing the role in the upcoming Star Wars film, Felicity Jones recently starred in The Theory of Everything as Jane Hawking, the wife of Stephen Hawking. She has been nominated for an Oscar for the role, and has also been seen in The Tempest and The Invisible Woman, among others.
The new film will be directed by Gareth Edwards with a script from Chris Weitz. Weitz replaces Gary Whitta, who had written the original script. The next Star Wars film will be Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is the 7th film in the franchise and is directed by J.J. Abrams.
The Star Wars film featuring Felicity Jones is scheduled to be released on December 16, 2016. However, before that, fans can get excited for The Force Awakens, which will be released on December 18th, 2015, and is set 30 years after the events of Return Of The Jedi.
