Texas Politician Demands Muslims Renounce Isis, Or Get Out

Molly White wants Muslim constituents to renounce Isis, or get out of her office.

Texas State Representative Molly White has made an announcement regarding anyone who is visiting Austin for Texas Muslim Capitol Day: Muslims, renounce Isis, or get out of my office. The problem with demanding that people renounce actions they had nothing to do with, other than being (at least nominally) of the same religion as the offender, has been thoroughly covered in recent incidents (nonviolent Muslims being expected to renounce the Charlie Hebdo attacks, despite not having anything to do with them), but it seems like Ms. White didn’t get the memo, or didn’t read it.

On her Facebook page, she announced the following.

Today is Texas Muslim Capital Day in Austin. The House is in recess until Monday. Most Members including myself are back in District. I did leave an Israeli flag on the reception desk in my office with instructions to staff to ask representatives from the Muslim community to renounce Islamic terrorist groups and publicly announce allegiance to America and our laws. We will see how long they stay in my office.

Boil that down: I’m not in the office, but my staff is under instructions to tell any Muslims who come in to speak to me that they must renounce Isis, or they’re not welcome in this office. Also, here’s an Israeli flag.

Of course, this ignores that most Muslims are not members of Isis, or of any terrorist group, and that asking them to ‘renounce’ that group is like asking all Christians to renounce the Westboro Baptist Church before having their grievances heard.

To be clear, the constituents aren’t happy with the statement. Here are a few of the top comments on Representative White’s post.

Muslims, renounce Isis or get out, says politician. People of Texas reply.

Others further reiterate these sentiments: they clearly don’t believe that Muslims should have to announce that they’re not affiliated with terrorists before being treated as citizens, and don’t appreciate the Israeli flag or Christianity being associated with Ms. White’s sentiments.

This statement came only hours after Molly White made another statement regarding American Muslims, and the decision of some to live by Sharia law, by their own choice and without enforcing it on others. She posted that ‘fringe groups’ should never be allowed to come here and ‘advance their own culture’ instead of assimilating into American culture, noting that:

Remember, in the Koran, it is ok to lie for the purpose of advancing Islam.

It’s not yet clear whether Representative Molly White will face any official sanctions for discrimination for suggesting that all Muslims should renounce Isis if they enter her office.
