In the past, I’ve made no secret about my hatred of excessive social media. Especially those platforms which are photo-based. But like every rule, eventually there will be an exception. And mine is Snapchat. The amazing app that allows users to send photos to friends, before it’s deleted forever. (Not true but this post isn’t about politics, so deal.) It’s free to use, lets you pick and choose who you send photos to. It even keeps track of points, as well as BFFs. Not that either of those variables matter … but they also definitely matter. More points = more being awesome, and so on.
Other glorious things about Snap:
- You can draw on pics
- You can choose a timeline
- You can see who viewed your pictures, and when
- There’s even a texting feature
- The combination of it all
Since adding the app 10-odd months ago (yes, I was late to the game), I’ve learned to appreciate its unique-ness. Sometimes a photo is just better than words. And sometimes you don’t want to share a picture with all of your Facebook friends. Better still are the pictures others will send to you, like your aunt and uncle who send multiple pics per day, each of which is more hilarious than the last.
But perhaps Snapchat’s biggest accomplishment is that it’s made selfies socially acceptable. Preferably embarrassing ones. It’s not a photo being blasted across the inter-web, it’s just a quick and fun pic that’s being sent to a select few. (Except that one friend who always takes a screenshot, always.) Therefore taking the vein-ness out of it and creating an environment in which it’s actually ok to flip the camera lens.
Whether you’re a lover of Snapchat or just a medium liker (I refuse to believe that there are Snap haters), it’s a solid way to stay in touch. One that still personalizes communication, while allowing us to embrace technology in one of the best possible ways.
