One of my close business friends asked me this question and he had a great point, people today are not motivated by anything. They see their job as just something they need to do to make a living. Because of this, they get distracted very easily and its hard for them to really be engaged and contribute at a high level.
I would agree with these statements. There are a number of important principles that guide me each day and I make I strive to make a difference by adhering to these principles. I also have a message on my board, “No distractions” that reminds me to stay focused.
Distractions can really suck the energy out of you. These distractions can be personal issues, political issues, relationships – both professional and personal, finances, repairs and the list goes on and on.
In today’s world, one of the biggest distractions is “information”. I am talking about the internet here. People typically take breaks from their work to check out the latest news in their community, on social media, sports, television and personal email.
Your motivation, speaks volumes about you as a person and a trusted resource at your workplace. I typically like to connect and spend time with people at work who are motivated and driven. You can see results when working with these people.
How does this topic apply to client relations?
Right now, people just want to know that someone cares about them and is listening to their question or concern. If you are a motivated person, it will show in the way you interact with your clients. Without clients, your company will not exist. Remember, your clients are also experiencing numerous distractions too. Make sure you respect their time when you talk with them. Here are some tips that have really come to light as result of “proper motivation” with respect to client relations.
- Answer your phone. Stop looking at the caller-id and trying to decide if this person is worth your time at the moment. You could be passing up potential work.
- Make sure you make it easy for your clients to leave messages. Consider your voice mail greeting and give your clients the option of leaving a message or sending you an email.
- If you don’t know the answer right away, take a message and tell the client you will get back to them in 10 -30 minutes.
- Make sure you allow people to leave questions on your website. Many people do not like talking on their phone and prefer email as their communication.
- Make sure you always thank people for their business. Too, often people feel unappreciated. Make sure you let them know you care about them as a person first and as a client second.
Having the proper motivation is key today in making a difference. I can’t tell you what that motivation is for you. Each person has their own set of ideals, beliefs and convictions that drive them. Take some time and answer this question, it will help you gain focus in a world full of distractions.
