Ava DuVernay is teaming up with Oprah Winfrey for a new drama series. The show will air on Oprah’s network, and the two of them will re-team for a project that they are both passionate about.

In addition to being an executive producer for the show on the OWN channel, Oprah will also have a recurring role on the show. It will mark the first time that she has acted in a series on her network, but the second time that she has collaborated with Ava DuVernay.

While her name may not be known to everyone yet, DuVernay has received a lot of busy lately as the director of Selma. The film told the story of the historic march that Martin Luther King Jr. led from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey’s upcoming drama series will be based on the novel Queen Sugar by Natalie Baszile. The novel was released in 2014, and is set in Louisiana, described as an unforgettable tale of endurance and hope.

In a statement regarding the project, DuVernay said “From the moment I was introduced to the book, I was captivated by the idea of a modern woman wrestling with identity, family, culture and the echoes of history. To bring this kind of storytelling to life alongside Oprah for her network is wildly wonderful. I’m excited about what’s in store.”

Her film Selma has received great praise from many critics and fans, and it also received two Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Song, “Glory” by Commmon and John Legend. However, a big topic surrounding the film was the nominations it did not get for DuVernay as director and David Oyelowo as Best Actor.

In addition to Ava DuVernay’s Selma, Oprah Winfrey has previously been seen on the big screen in Lee Daniels’ The Butler and The Color Purple. Queen Sugar is the first novel from Natalie Baszile, and focuses on a widow who moves from Los Angeles to Louisiana after inheriting a sugar cane farm.
