Can corruption see an end in the country? It would be too early to comment on that but there has been some beginning. Last week we saw the Supreme Court giving the right to voters to reject politicians in the upcoming elections. Today RJD leader and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad has been accused in the case related to withdrawal of Rs. 37 crores from the Chaibasa treasury case number RC 20-A/96 in the Rs. 900 crore-fodder scam (approx $310 million in 2013).
The Fodder Scam was a corruption scandal that spanned many years and allegedly involved numerous Bihar state’s administrative and elected officials across multiple administrations of the Indian National Congress and the Janata Dal parties. The corruption scheme involved the fabrication of “vast herds of fictitious livestock” for which fodder, medicines and animal husbandry equipment was supposedly procured. Although the scandal broke in 1996, the theft had been in progress, and increased in size, for over two decades.
This is one of the six cases where the RJD supreme including former chief minister Jagannath Mishra and 36 others were taken into custody to be sent to Hotwar jail in Ranchi. The ex- Bihar CM may face imprisonment for a minimum of three and a maximum of seven years and will be sentenced on Thursday through video conferencing.
