Google Gives Companies The “Yellow Card” – Why Quality Content Matters

Google Gives Companies The “Yellow Card” – Why Quality Content Matters image VuvuzelaGet the out the vuvuzela folks, it’s almost World Cup time! Every four years, we gather together to watch countries from around the globe clash at soccer (or football, depending on where you’re from). There are so many things I love about the World Cup…the athleticism…the excitement…the intense competition!

You know what I can’t stand? Athletes playing dirty. There’s just something so dishonorable about players taking cheap shots or faking injuries. When players get out of line, the officials give out a Yellow Card to issue a caution. It’s their way of saying, “HEY! You’ve been warned.”

Just recently, Google gave a major yellow card to various organizations on the web. It appears that these companies were playing dirty and trying to cheat the SEO system.

For those of you who are not familiar, SEO (stands for Search Engine Optimization) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic that comes to your website by search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) In a nutshell, when people search for keywords or phrases on the Internet, an algorithm determines which website pages pop up first. There are certain tactics you can use to help your website get found before your competition.

Unfortunately, many marketers were trying to take advantage of the system and were employing cheap tactics to get found. For examples, many websites were mass producing spam-like content to create an infinite amount of pages on their website. The thinking was… “let’s replicate as many pages as possible and load them up with various desired keywords and phrases over and over again to help our website get found.”

Instead, Google wants researchers online to find quality websites instead of theses SPAM-MY sites. This is why valuable content on your website matters. Google is now punishing websites that produce mass, SPAM content and rewards companies that provide quality content.

Quoting an article from Business Insider called “Google is Punishing These Major Web Brands For Publishing Spammy Content,” by Jim Edwards:

The intent of Google’s updates is the same as all its previous updates: It is attempting to discriminate against spam webpages that publish duplicate, thin, or useless content simply for the purpose of getting search traffic from Google. Google has always said that the No.1 goal of its search engine is to point readers to the highest quality webpages possible, and to bury results for low-quality sites.

Soccer is a lot like marketing. You have a bunch of players, or companies, competing with one another to get to the top. Consider Google the “head official” of digital marketing. If you try to cheat the system, you’re going to eventually get caught. Play by the rules and use a strong joint content marketing and SEO strategy, and watch your website climb the ranks of search engines!
