Google+ Launch New Insights Feature – Too Little Too Late?

If your Google+ company home page looked a little different last week – don’t panic. The social network have launched a new admin page called “My Business”, which includes insights, YouTube stats and an option to share content directly from the admin page.

The most interesting aspect of this update is clearly the long-awaited Insights feature which Google+ Vice President Bradley Horowitz admitted was one of their “most oft asked-for features”.

If you delve deeper into the insights by following the link to the Insights page, you’ll find that it’s broken down into three categories: Visibility, Engagement and Audience.

The visibility tab shows you the the total views of your G+ profile page and content, and can be broken down by post views, profile views and photo views.

The photo views can include views from the following sources: Google+, Google Search, Google Image Search, Google Maps and others.

This information is presented in the form of a line graph and can be broken down by the last seven, 30 or 90 days or by all-time data.

This is useful as you can see which posts are most effective and how much visibility your posts and page are really receiving.

The next tab is the Engagement card which allows you to sift through a detailed view of the different actions any user has made on your posts as well as the amount of views each post has received.

This is also broken down in a similar graph to the Visibility card, but further insights into individual posts give you the option to view stats from the last 72 hours.

Actions include +1 clicks, shares and comments.

Another cool feature of this card is the ability to view the average number of actions users took on your post by the type of post – text, link, photo or video.

This gives you a good idea of the type of content that works well on your page and what works not as well.

The last card is all about your Audience and offers some great insight into who you should be, and are, targeting your content at – but it’s not all good news. This information is only available to pages with more than 200 followers, which seems a bit ridiculous seeing as the time when you want to know your audience the most is when you’re building it.

Anyway, the number of new followers you have is presented daily, and can be broken down by the last seven, 30 or 90 days.

As helpful as all of this data is, it’s only what other social networks have been doing for a period of time, so it’s a long time coming for Google+ to finally catch up in the Insights game.

So, what do you think about Google+’s new Insights tool? Is it a helpful and interesting feature that you’ll get a lot of use out of, or too little too late to get you to use the social network?
