Who would say no to a free education? In the 2011-2012 school year, the average cost for full-time in-state public tuition was roughly $15,000. This includes tuition, books, fees, and housing. For those who can’t afford a university education or those who have a thirst for continuing their academic path, the cost is simply too high. Fortunately, there are several great ways anyone can continue their education, without paying the price tag.
Open courseware (OCWs) are teacher-oriented courses, offered for free on many different platforms. Similar to OCWs, massive open online courses (MOOCs) are student-oriented and often offered by universities as online versions of their classes. Both OCWs and MOOCs are collections of high-quality, curated materials. Coursera, a popular open course platform, has a community of over 7.5 million registered students. It offers over 650 courses and is partnered with 109 universities and organizations. Another one, edX includes over 150 courses in a variety of different subjects. It was founded by MIT and Harvard in 2012. Over 100,000 certificates have been earned by edX students.
While degrees may be able to take someone places and open up new doors, they are not for everyone. There are plenty of ways to continue an education without breaking the bank. A person’s attitude and demeanor is most important.
