A lot of the times, finding a job is hard enough, but maintaining one can be just as challenging. There are many things that employees can do right or wrong in order to keep a job they needed for so long but maintaining a job isn’t so difficult after all so long as you know understand the ins and outs of proper conduct in any employment setting.
Here are five habits that a successful employee will always do in order to keep his or her job:
1) Be on time.
Punctuality might seem like an obvious thing to do for some in order to be successful as an employee, but there are some people who really struggle with it. There are folks who live with “chronic lateness”—a disorder that is somewhat tongue-in-cheek among friends but a real disorder for those who can’t keep a job because they can never manage to make it to work on time. Being on time is important because it shows your employer that you are dedicated to the work schedule and functions with the rest of the team who arrive on time to their jobs. Furthermore, it shows that you are a team player who is respectful of other people’s time. Punctuality isn’t restricted only to arriving to work. It extends to being on time at meetings, dinners and other functions that your job may host. Being successful as an employee can start with something as simple as being on time.
2) Respect your employer.
Being respectful to your employer is simple. Listen carefully to instructions, be courteous, and never talk back or interrupt. Sometimes being respectful to one’s employer can be difficult, especially if one has a boss who is hard to deal with. But at the end of the day, your employer is the one who signs off on your paychecks. Think of it this way: a job is a job, and an employer is part of that job. If you can get away with the four things: listening to instructions, being courteous, not talking back and not interrupting the boss when he or she is speaking, you can easily be successful as an employee. You never have to like your boss, but you should show him or her respect because it generally keeps the overall morale up with other employees.
3) Show passion.
Some people are extremely lucky because he or she is working his or her dream job. Not everyone is fortunate to work his or her dream job, but the good news is, everybody has a passion in life. Whether it’s just hosting a work event or party, or working for a specific department, e.g. accounting versus human resources, you can find areas in your day-to-day job where your passion really shows and thrives. Showing passion at work will help you be a successful employee because your employer and supervisors will notice it. It reinforces morale and shows others that you care about the success of the company and your own career.
4) Show initiative.
There is nothing a boss loves more than an employee who shows initiative. No matter what, there is always something to do at a job site. Just as frequently as this, there is always a moment of downtime at a job site. Be sure to show initiative. By having an awareness of your surroundings, the bigger picture of your job function, and the needs at the job site, you’ll be able to find ways to fill in the holes where nobody else is able to. Showing initiative can be as simple as taking care of backlogged duties that went forgotten. It can also be something like volunteering to handle something that would generally go untaken by others at the company. When you show initiative, it shows your employer that you care about the company’s bigger picture and success.
5) Don’t gossip.
There is nothing worse than being a gossip. Job sites will always have at least one or two gossips. People who gossip do it because they are bored with their job or insecure about something that may or may not be related to their career. Avoid gossip at all costs. It brings down morale, distracts your from your work, and becomes an encumbrance to the company because it slows down functions. When people are wasting time with gossip, they are hurting others whether they intend to do so or not. Don’t gossip and don’t be a gossip. Your success as an employee will go long because people will like you and find you trustworthy. No one trusts a gossip!
