In the world of university donations, public colleges are the figurative little brothers of private colleges. In 2015, only four of the 25 colleges that received the most fundraising were public undergraduate schools. Of the 25 richest private universities, 20 have endowments over $3 billion. Only seven public colleges have endowments that size.
Using the most recent data reported to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), StartClass ranked the top 25 public colleges based on endowment. According to the NCES, endowment assets are “gross investments of endowment funds, term endowment funds and funds functioning as endowment for the institution and any of its foundations and other affiliated organizations.”
Unlike private universities, public colleges receive public funding in addition to donations, so the reliance upon donations is somewhat mitigated. Three public colleges have endowments larger than $5 billion, with one topping the $10 billion mark.
Note: We excluded the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, which has an endowment of $988 million, from the list. The school reports having five undergraduate students, but we were unable to verify the existence of an undergraduate program at the university.
