Netflix and DreamWorks Animation have revealed the first trailer for “Voltron: Legendary Defender,” their upcoming animated series reboot of the “Voltron” franchise. The world of both TV and film are currently being dominated by nostalgia. Classic programs are being rebooted and revived at alarmingly increasing rates, with millennials being able to relive their childhoods by calling back to the shows that entertained them as kids.
The series follows five heroes who get their own lion bots and become the last line of defense for Arus and other planets against an evil alien force led by King Zarkon. The popular 1980s cartoon fantasy franchise with one really cool giant robot is being introduced to a new generation.
“We’re trying to keep as much of that classic feel to it as we can, because ultimately we have huge amounts of nostalgia for (the original) show,” says co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery to USA Today.
The show works for executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos because it marries “a true sense of epic adventure” with “the campy nature of five lions that become a giant robot.”
Legendary Defender centers on five Earth teenagers — Keith (voiced by Steven Yeun), Lance (Jeremy Shada), Hunk (Tyler Labine), Pidge (Bex Taylor-Klaus) and Shiro (Josh Keaton) — who are thrown into the middle of an intergalactic battle and become the last line of defense for Arus and other planets against an evil alien force led by King Zarkon.

Writer Tim Hedrick said to EW that “each of the pilots will have more in-depth stories” and later explained that the villain “Zarkon has a role in our show and he’s super bad! For 10,000 years, he’s been out conquering the universe.”

While the crew remarked how the original cartoon each resonated with them, Lauren Montgomery, co-executive producer, promised more diversity in this new interation. “Let’s represent everyone; show diversity and all types of people in this show.”
This trailer opens with one of the pilots, presumably the one being voiced by The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun, opening the hangar-sized garage door in order to release the legendary robot lions from their den. After seeing the individual robots for a quick moment, they fly into the sky and quickly begin forming the star of the show: Voltron.
While it is a bit early to show us footage from the new series, this trailer did go into the mechanics that it takes to make five lions into one humanoid robot- as a kid, we just assume that these robots fit into each other like our action figures or legos. But it seems that the upcoming Netflix series is going for a bit more realism, even though we’re still talking about giant flying lion robots, according to Cinema Blend.
All thirteen episodes of the reboot’s first season will be released later this year on the streaming service.
