Chris began his career as a chemical engineer and was dissatisfied with the outdated publishing model, and eventually started JETLAUNCH, a self-publishing business, from the ground up. JETLAUNCH helps businesses and business people publish high quality books that establish them as top-notch experts in their fields. Ultimately, Chris wanted to use his creativity to help others while also having control of his own life. He first became a high school teacher, then was asked to design a book while learning web design, then had to figure out how to make an ebook for a client that inquired. Chris saw how much he enjoyed books, and built up his technical knowledge based on his passion to create his company.
He saw that other self-publishing platforms were taking large amounts of money from their clients to produce books, but were simultaneously taking control and the author’s rights. Even though these were self-publishing platforms, they did not have many of the advantages of self-publishing. It all comes down to intellectual property. Some of the self-publishing companies come right out and say that they own the rights to the work, while others own it by virtue of having control over the distribution. Even though the book is available through Amazon and similar outlets, it is still being purchased through the self-publishing business so they continue to get a cut. They also have control over who the clients are (they don’t release the names) and you only receive a percentage of your profits from publication. You still work within and around their system.
JETLAUNCH focuses on and specializes in a narrow niche of print book design (cover and andebook conversion), and help with the publishing process. In true, effective self-publishing, the books stay in the author’s name and in the author’s account, with 100% of the royalties going to the author. JETLAUNCH has mastered the process of streamlining so that all of the rights and control stay with the author.
Even though the stigma of self publishing is gone, it is still crucial to have a self-published book look as good (if not better) than a traditionally published one. If the product is built to high standards, that is how you connect with a good audience. The care and professionalism you put into it set the tone from the beginning. JETLAUNCH also produces other information products, but most people think in terms of a book. People are not too used to consuming information in many various formats, but there are forms, like anebook, that most are comfortable with.
On the topic of indie vs. traditional publishing, Chris stands passionately behind self-publishing for everyone.
Traditional publishing needs to go through a massive transformation in and of itself and change their business model. In the meantime, with self-publishing right now you have the ability to create the end product that you want, the ability to share your work with the same audience that you want, and you can even partner with a traditional publisher for your distribution to earn almost 90% of your royalties (instead of the 15% you would get from traditional publishing).
There is no reason that you can’t have everything that a traditionally published author can have; control AND the lion’s share of the royalties. It is not difficult to hire the right people and still remain in control. It’s YOUR product, it’s YOUR baby. If you don’t already know who your audience is before you wrote your book, you’re off on the wrong foot.
– Who is your audience?
– Who are your competitors?
– What is your message?
It’s important to know those things! Your BOOK is a BUSINESS!
And because your book must be thought of as a business, Chris recommends the following read to help you write with your end goal in mind:
Every Book is a Start Up by Todd Sattersten
Get the title to fit your audience and attract people, says Chris. Have your book professionally edited, no matter how good you are. Even if you’re a professional editor still get it edited because it will show if you don’t. It may seem unprofessional or foolish because your message is not getting across. You don’t want to be ineffective. Use a good developmental editor! IT WILL BE WELL WORTH IT!!
How does Chris make the JETLAUNCH experience different in a very complicated, rapidly changing publishing universe? He says it’s quite simple, or at least they make it that way. You can expect extremely friendly personal customer service. Your e-mails will be answered right away. There is so much to the process and you want to get a product that is professional and well-designed. And you want it to be quick! JETLAUNCH can take care of your Ebook, print book and cover design, all in 6 weeks or less. They want it to be perfect!
