Lessening Social Clutter

I think Social Clutter is a very appropriate term to describe the world we live in today. We can easily live in a world of excess and overload. Feeling overwhelmed and bombarded? Do you ever have the feeling you just have too much to do? It happens to me every day!

My wife passed along an interesting article about How Clutter Affects Your Brain by Mikael Cho. There were some very interesting points that I think have specific correlation to companies, social media, and #SocialSales. BTW – if you are interested, my clutter downfall is his 4th Master the Clutter point – clear your computer desktop of all files daily. Mine is a mess by the end of the day, but I have now created a “Desktop To-Do” folder (see screen shot of my new desktop below) and I hope it will help me at least keep my clutter organized. We will see.

A few overall points stuck with me.

  • Clutter is both mental clutter and physical clutter.

  • We each have a different perception of clutter.

  • Clutter affects our ability to be creative and our ability to process experiences.

I will briefly walk you through my thought process about how the points above correlate with things below. I am sure it would be a very interesting insight for you to take a quick look at applications of clutter in your world.

Companies – Employees, products, services, marketing efforts, and websites should try to adhere to a Keep It Simple mentality. I think having this approach would greatly reduce the clutter that we all feel in the marketplace. It would be refreshing to engage in clear and concise dialog and conversations on consistent basis.

Social Media – Pick any social network or environment, and you will easily see that one of the biggest frustrations is that people can get overwhelmed very quickly. The massive amount of social information and social interaction immediately clutters the user. Every social network has continued to try and adjust the user experience, and allow for each user to customize how much social clutter they are comfortable with.

#SocialSales – A day in the life of a salesperson is always centered around activity (phone calls, emails, meetings). One of the traps that a sales person can fall into is focusing on generating as much activity as possible, rather than focusing on the right activity. That is why having a sales person try to be a social marketer focuses them on the wrong kind of activity. The key here is to not clutter a salesperson’s world with social marketing activity. Enable them with the tool (SMMS), and more importantly the content, to devote their focus to business development and closing deals.

I consider myself to be pretty skilled at multi-tasking. I am thinking through how I can do less multi-tasking in the office and track my productivity. I will keep you posted when I come up with a more complete plan. In the meantime, I am looking forward to less clutter or at least what feels like less clutter.
