A .London domain will launch next year, giving brands based in the capital a huge opportunity to boost their SEO and lay claim to another web address.
ICANN, the global internet domain registration body, has given permission for the new generic top-level domain (gTLD) to be used from summer 2014. Brands, individuals and companies in London will have the opportunity to apply for the domain, which will come at an as yet unannounced price.
The call for companies to adopt a .London web address when it’s available comes directly from the Mayor of London’s office. As companies claim their new domain, the visibility and profile of the capital online is set to rocket. Selfridges has already expressed an interest in signing up, as have tens of thousands of other brands.
A direct association with the capital – and its own brand in turn – is something that London-based companies could be keen to exploit. Those that are already well known as ‘[brand name] London’ might see adoption of the new domain as natural progression. Creative and descriptive website names are also more memorable: .is, .it and .me are all great endings to use, and .London adds many more possibilities.
The effect on search engine optimisation could also be a significant one. Newer Google algorithms take the domain into account when ranking websites, not least because Google plans to roll out over 100 of their own. For example, someone searching in the UK is already more likely to see results for .co.uk sites than the .com equivalents.
One of the new and more specific domains could boost your online profile, yet the content of your website is no less important. Once customers have found you, engaging and relevant copywriting is what will keep them reading – and ultimately make them want to get in touch. Why not find out more about what we do?
