Choosing the Right Social Platform: the Key to Social Success

A lot of individuals and businesses believe that having a social networking account is essential, that it is the “cool” thing to do and without one you’re essentially living in the past. While there are numerous advantages to having a social networking account on the likes of Facebook and Twitter, it’s more important you use them the right way, as opposed to just signing up and seeing what happens, to help you reach out to new audiences.

Are you just after followers? Do you want to gain traffic to your website? Or do you want to increase engagement? These are all important considerations because there is often no point in being on some of the networks. For example, the Catmose Sports Centre Facebook page is used to encourage people to get involved with their latest fitness classes and to provide valuable information about healthy eating and lifestyles, and the Hidden Hearing Twitter page is primarily used to raise awareness of hearing loss and hearing related problems.

Consumers follow brands on social media for a variety of reasons, from learning about products and services that are available to them to keeping up with the latest activities, even competitions and promotions, or just to provide feedback to the brand after making a purchase from them. Each purpose would mean using a specific type of social networking site, and that’s why it’s important that you sit down and establish exactly what you want to achieve with your account rather than just adopting them all, or the ones that you understand.

Facebook

The majority of social network sites allow you to upload photos/videos and text. Millions of businesses use Facebook one of the largest social network and take advantage of the benefits to be had, ranging from the Insights page which gives information on how many people have seen certain posts, so that you can establish what works and what doesn’t; to the ability to use the cover photo section to showcase your latest product or send a message to the people who have liked your page.

Twitter

Twitter is one of the best social networks to share information and news. You only get a limited number of characters to get your message across, so it’s important that you get to the point and hook your audience. You can share photos and videos, although most of these are accessed using links rather than actually sharing them on the platform. It gives you the chance to respond to messages from your followers and interaction is key, helping you to show that you’re not just a computer, you’re real people just like your customers.

Google Plus

This is the social network that is arguably the best for business purposes. It allows you to post videos, links, pictures and text just like you can on Facebook, but you can group your followers according to their interests and professions in what they call ‘circles’. This means that you could categorise them under ‘customers’ for example, so that you can share specific content with them, and ‘colleagues’ under a different circle where you could share industry-related information.

Pinterest

This is a photo sharing network that allows you to create a series of ‘boards’ so that you can promote your brand however you choose. If what you are posting is interesting or exciting enough, other users will pin the pictures on their own pages and that will help to increase your engagement and traffic to your site. By adding a Pinterest link on your site, next to the products you’re selling for instance, people can share images of the products they like with others who will be interested and they’ll head to your site to find them.
