For a good while now hashtags have been a fantastic way to track social media campaigns through social media sites such as Twitter.
When you create your own hashtags it also means you can get more relevant users involved in your discussion, they make searches easier and help your tweets become more visible, sometimes even viral (if they have wide enough appeal).
The problem has always been that the use of #hashtags has been limited to social media and while hashtags are often used to promote content there has never been a way (at least that I’ve found) to incorporate hashtags into other channels such as content and unify it with social in more of an integral way.
That is, until now…
What is #HASHCORE?
#HASHCORE is a new WordPress plugin that helps to bridge the gap between content and social by allowing the incorporation hashtags within content. These hashtags are clickable and allow users to open up a pop over which displays the most recent Tweets with the particular hashtag.
How to setup the #HASHCORE plugin and get the most out of it
Setup is as simple as 1, 2, 3 …
- Apply for a publisher ID at Hashcore.com
- Install and activate the plugin
- Add your Twitter username and publisher ID
Using the plugin is extremely easy, in fact the only thing you need to do is to incorporate hashtags in your content and the plugin will do the rest, converting all hashtags to clickable links that will display popups for users with real time results for the particular hashtag.
This is a great way to keep users on your page for longer and provide a unique and engaging experience.
There are a few things you need to remember when using #HASHCORE, firstly it’s recommended that you use CamelCase, so instead of using #socialmedia, you should use #SocialMedia which should give you better results.
Tools to help you
There are both websites and even social media tools that help you find out what hashtags you should be using (for example Hashtags.org) and tools like Ritetag.com that will help you measure the success of your hashtags.

What’s also really useful about this plugin is that it doesn’t just show you recent Tweets with your selected hashtag, but it also incorporates your Twitter account putting it in prime position for your users to follow you. You can also reply to, retweet or favourite Tweets that are picked up in the search.
On top of that you’re also going to improve awareness of hashtags that you incorporate into your content so if you’re using any particular hashtags to help your social media campaigns go further and assist with tracking. All while helping you to improve visibility.
Bloggers are already starting to adopt this new plugin, you can see a live example at Winnipeghomefinder.com.
What’s on the horizon?
It is early days yet for #HASHCORE but Sebastian Collorafi and Tim Bobker have some great updates lined up to help bloggers get more out of this plugin.
One of the planned updates is the development of a publisher dashboard that will give access to some form of analytics.
Another one of the main updates that I can see being very popular is the ability for bloggers to put their own advertisements in the popup window. Bloggers or publishers alike will have another opportunity to monetize their websites.
Summary
While your visitors are checking out the hashtags with #HASHCORE it also means that they have another reason to stay on your site and at the same time helping to get you more Twitter followers that want to hear what you have to say – real Twitter followers .
Sebastian Collorafi and Tim Bobker have provided us with a great opportunity to bring more attention to #hashtags that you want to make more visible at the same time as giving us a way that bring content and social together in a very unique way.
For me, this plugin opens up some very interesting possibilities on how social and content can be integrated in the future.
