Getting over a painful experience is much like
crossing monkey bars.
You have to let go at some point in order to
move forward.
Change is often a very scary thing. When you make a change in your life, you move yourself into the unknown. You travel from a place of relative safety to one where you do not know exactly what will happen. The truth of life is that there is nothing you can do to stop change from happening. This world is always changing – sometimes for good and sometimes not. The best thing you can do for yourself is to learn the best ways to adapt to change. You will soon learn that there is little or no reason to fear!
Strategies you can use to help get through change
1. Positive thinking. When you embark on a change in your life, it is important that you think it through in a positive way. Instead of thinking about all of the things that could go wrong, picture it all going right for a change.
2. Pay attention to life’s lessons. Think about some of the past changes that you have come through in your life and include both the positive outcomes and the negative ones. Regardless of your past, it is very likely that you have learned some choice and important life lessons along your journey. But you know that if you keep your life stagnant, you will probably lose out on the many important life lessons and experiences ahead.
3. Write. I know you hate this, but write down your thoughts. Writing down your innermost thoughts can provide a release similar to confiding with a very close friend. Change can be scary, but if you provide yourself with a way to look at your fear and investigate ways through, you can find your courage underneath the fear.
4. Stay motivated. If you want to get through your fear of change, you have to actually want the change. If you do, you will do whatever it takes to get and stay motivated. You can do this by reciting affirmations, writing directions down for yourself, or asking a trusted friend or family member for some assistance.
5. Be present. Staying in the present moment can help you deal with almost any fear. It is far too easy for your mind to get caught up in the regrets about the past or concerns about the future. In moments of self-doubt, shift you focus to whatever you are doing at the present moment. This moment is all you ever really have, so you may as well enjoy it!
6. Figure out the steps. If you are planning a big change in your life, perhaps it will help you of break down the change into a series of smaller steps. Doing so will help you to feel less overwhelmed. In this way you can easily transition into a change instead of feeling shocked and scared stiff.
7. The time is now. Remember that it is always the right time to change. Stop making excuses for yourself. Believe that you can do it and go for it!
8. Plan B. When you strike out on a path of change, it may be the unknown that scares you most. If it is possible, carefully plan through your change. Think about all the possible scenarios and outcomes. Both the positive and negative. Then make a plan. When you have a plan that you can look at, you will ease many of your fears of the unknown and feel at least a little more comfortable with the process of change.
Change for the Better
Change is going to find you one way or another, so you may as well learn how to go with the flow and learn how to let go of the past. Sure, this is easier said than done, but, learning how to better adapt to change can improve every aspect of your life!
