10 Tweaks To Make To Your Social Media Routine

10 Tweaks To Make To Your Social Media Routine image social media routineWhen you embarked on the adventure known as social media, chances are clicks, posts and tweets were exciting and new. However, now that you’ve mastered your initial efforts, it’s normal for things to seem dull and maybe even a little bit boring. Luckily, we’ve listed 10 tweaks you can make so that your social media routine feels anything but – well, routine.

1. Share Some Stories

You probably already try to produce content that is relevant and easy for users to put into action, but what about the power of the narrative form?

Consider spicing up your blog posts (or Facebook notes) by telling a story. Online readers are looking for more than just useable advice, they also want to escape, dive in and explore.

Through traditional storytelling you can not only pass on lessons learned, but you can also open yourself up and allow readers to connect. Thoughtfully-revealing social media efforts will encourage connections and cross communication.

2. Classify Consistent Content

You probably work hard to create consistent and relevant blog posts, tweets, and shares, but have you thought about branding some content with a theme?

Give audience members something they can rely on (and hopefully look forward to) by categorizing your content. Take a lesson from Instagram with things like #tbt (Throw Back Thursday) where every Thursday people post old photos/memories.

Try to create your own one-day a week trend that is consistent with that day’s content. For example, Trend Tuesday where you share trends you’re noticing in your business or Do Something Sundays, where you share a challenge you’ve been facing and your plans to overcome it.

Be patient with this tend and allow it some time to catch on. In the end, you’re going to be providing relevant content anyway, branding is just an extra step in gaining a cohesive content look…plus, it’s a nice touch.

3. Rev Up Reviews

You probably already keep an eye on the online reviews pertaining to your business, but are you encouraging them?

Reviews serve as a reflecting glass for all industries as to what is working, what needs fixing and what customers are thinking and feeling. Plus, the more positive buzz you’ve got going, the better. Encourage reviews by letting customers know (though signage or conversation) what social media streams you’re on; share with them that you value their business and want their input.

4. Plan For Powerful Posts

You probably already draft ideas for content at the beginning of each week, but why not plan it around special holidays or events?

The driving force behind social media is summed up on one word: connections. People want to relate with others, and especially when it comes to online brands, they want to be reminded of your connection to their personal worlds.

Plan to make universal connections by checking out the calendar and putting a little extra effort into your Google search. Seek out sources of content that touch on what’s relevant that day (i.e. the Olympics, Grandparents Day, National Chocolate Day) and grab audience’s attentions by pointing out your connected, current relevance.

5. Welcome a Different Point of View

You probably already strive to post unbiased and well-rounded content, but when was the last time you invited a different voice onto your social media stream?

As a business owner you have two groups that you rely heavily on for the success of your business: customers and staff; happiness, satisfaction and the feeling of being heard is important to both groups.

Spice up your platforms (and make an effort to interact with these necessary groups) by posting a staff poll or interviewing a loyal customer. The invitation is flattering, the content has the potential to be interesting and everyone involved will feel tended to. Sound good?

6. Advance Your Interaction

You probably already like and retweet content that you enjoy, but how much time are you devoting to paying back the process of social media by taking on the role of an active audience member?

Carve out some time to really interact online (in ways more than just managing your own pages and profiles). Explore and participate in relevant brands that speak to you and your business. Share interesting articles that inspire you or post an outstandingly informative inforgraphic.

7. Add is a Splash of Self Promotion

You probably have done your best not to make your pages overly promotional, and you should keep it that way…however…

At the end of the day, you are tweeting and posting in an effort to promote your business. So consider injecting two semi-promotional posts per twenty unbiased ones. Of course you shouldn’t display a full-blown promotion. But in addition to being engaging, relevant and informative it couldn’t hurt to link to a related product or service that just so happens to be available for purchase through you. Use this tweak wisely and remember: less will always be more.

8. Host a Social Media Event

You probably use social media to share your expertise, but why not host a specialized event?

From live chats to tweet ups, offer a different way to interact with your niche audience; consider hosting one around a topic you already know up and down, inside and out. Like any good host, you’ll need to tend to everyone at the party; so make sure you’re organized, leading the way and have a plan in place as to how you’ll usher the event. A few surprises (like a special guest or available prizes) never hurts either.

9. Engage With The Competition

You probably already keep an eye on your competition, but when was the last time you pulled up a chair and stayed a while?

Tone down your stalker behavior and consider interacting with your competitors and their sites. WARNING: No one is suggesting that you wage a twitter war; instead you’ve got to play clean, fair and creatively. Applaud them for their accolades, stand up with them in the face of industry biases or trends and above all, aim to be clever and catchy…you never know which audience members (who fits into your customer profile) will turn that second glance into a intrigued click.

10. Challenge Yourself To Try Something New

You’ve probably never tried this before, and that’s ok!

While tweaking your current social media routines is a great and feasible way to shake things up, don’t be afraid to try something totally new. Whether you’ve never done a Vine video, have been hesitant to join Instagram, or paused on Pintrest, the beauty of social media is that it’s never too late to join the party.

Take an example from this list and start by making small changes first. For example, this week read up on your newest platform of choice, week two think of possible posts and talk to friends and family members who are users for insider tips, by week three you should create your profile and before the month is over you’ve climbed aboard yet another social media train. Destination: anywhere.
