3 Lessons on Building an Audience through Content Marketing from Army of Darkness Defense

One thing you might not know about me is that I’m an avid gamer. I play video games from casual games like Candy Crush to complex strategy games like Civilization.

There are a lot of lessons that can be learned from playing games. I’m currently enjoying an Android game (also on iPhone) called Army of Darkness Defense. It’s one of the funniest movies of all time. It’s the third of the Evil Dead Series and sequels and remakes had been made. Of course, because of its popularity, it was turned into a game. Let me tell you, this game is fun and also full of important lessons about building an audience through content marketing.

Here are the top three lessons I learned about building an audience from Army of Darkness Defense:

Upgrading a Blog’s Content is Crucial

In Army of Darkness Defense, upgrading your toon (or avatar) and his arsenal is crucial to be able to move to the next level and win the game eventually.

In content marketing, when you want to build an audience, upgrading your content is also very important. What I mean by upgrading is not necessarily creating more content. Keep in mind that your content can be a powerful arsenal when you want to stand out. If you have EPIC content that is able to garner a lot of shares, tweets, or likes, you can upgrade that content through repurposing. If it is a long and heavy post, you can make it more appealing and enjoyable to read by turning it into an infographic. You can also make it more interactive by creating a short educational video, a webcast or a podcast and having one or two of your audience participate in the discussion or through commenting.

Another excellent strategy is to review your old post and optimise it. Check and correct spellings and grammars then improve and tighten the flow of your copy.

By doing these things, you will be able to thrust your audience building and content marketing game plan into the next level.

Having Friends, Tools, and Platforms is a Necessity for Building an Audience

The tower defense game also provides the principal character with companions. Ash, the hero, can call on other heroes to help repel the Deadite invasion – the wise man who has the power to heal him and two powerful lords, Henry the Red and Lord Arthur, who can both withstand heavy beatings and kill stronger forces.

Building an audience is not something that you can do all by yourself in this day and age. You need to have people around you to help spread the word and promote your content. You also need tools and platforms to increase the reach of your content.

It is worth having friends who are known in social circles (influencers) who can help you get your content into the open. It is also worth being in sites where you can get lots of traffic and traction. However, it is also important to have your own identity.

Take note influencers have large number of followers. Being in good graces of one can go a long way as they can help spread your content with their followers and friends.

As with platforms and tools, aside from social media, there are other channels like syndication sites, news aggregators, and other content publishing sites.

There is social media to help spread the good work you are doing. Believe me, if your content is worth linking to, social media can make your content go viral. Considering as well that billions of people are already into social media, minus the paid promotions, that’s billions of organic traffic.

So don’t be afraid and use social media to promote your awesome content.

As to syndication sites, news aggregators, publishing sites, they can also be great channels of promoting your content and getting large followings. There are syndications sites like Business 2 Community, Social Media Today, or Mashable. These sites are boasting of thousands of organic traffic.

Another is branding. Branding is important in any business. No business would like to simply pass into oblivion. Every business wants to succeed. What does content marketing have to do with branding? Content marketing is just the new way of branding. Even already branded companies like Coca-cola and Lego use content marketing as part of their marketing campaigns. They largely depend on their loyal followers and brand advocates for support. That’s why they have some of the most well-known and viral content of all time.

It Pays to be Patient When It Comes to Content Marketing

In a tower defense game you need to be patient. As Ash, you are one kick-butt action hero. However, even action heroes can fall into the clutches of the living dead if you attack head down without any potent plan.

This is where your content marketing strategy comes in. You don’t just jump head first into content creation without strategy and preparation. In the preparation phase, you should always plan clearly and thoroughly what you will serve your audience.

When it comes to your content, never rush your article or copy. Do not settle for a good post when you can create an awesome post. Do not be too trigger happy on the publish button. Proofread your post multiple times, or if you have the time, leave it in draft for a few days and then re-read it before posting. Be a killer editor in order to serve your audience an excellent piece that they will never forget.

Growing Your Audience is Not Easy

Much like a lot of things in this world worth doing, growing your audience will require hard work and dedication. Let me add to that, determination and the iron will to push through multiple failures.

In tower defense, you need to have a combination of luck, skill, and patience. Notice that the only thing you have no control over is luck. In content marketing, luck is also the only variable you don’t control.

The only way to grow an audience is with a determined mindset, a dedicated attitude, and killer content. No amount of gimmicks and short term SEO tricks can replace real value that you put forth to your visitors. With real and valuable content, you are solving pain points and informing your audience at the same time.

That is what I learned about content marketing from a tower defense game. Did you learn anything about growing an audience from another game genre?
