Mobile gaming has only been around for a five or six years and it’s already a billion dollar industry. Companies like King and Zyung have been enjoying the fruits of an app based industry that feeds of things like the unexpected addiction people have of cutting fruit with a ninja sword on their phone.
Are you thinking about dipping your feet into the mobile gaming industry with a few apps of your own? Well let’s take a look at the statistics. (These statistics were gathered from a variety of sources. For more information, check out the source links below.)
The Client Base
As of May of last year, 56% of people in the entire world own smartphones. More than three times as many mobile devices ship each year than tablets, laptops and desktops combined, and half of that people that have mobile devices with internet connectivity use their mobile devices and an exclusive or primary means of communication. 80% of the time people spend on their mobile devices is spent on apps, and 32% of the time they’re looking at games – which accounts for more time than any other single aspect of mobile device usage.[1]
In a nutshell, the majority of humans on the planet have mobile devices and games take up more time than anything else. All this means that, in truth, mobile devices are used more as sophisticated handheld game consoles than anything else!
The Gaming Side of Things
In 2011 the mobile device gaming industry brought in $12 billion and it’s only continued to rise exponentially in the last couple of years. It’s expected reach $54 billion by next year! Over a third of the top 100 grossing apps – not just gaming apps, but apps in general – are games that use the “freemium” business model. Well over 50% of the top 100 grossing apps are games, and 64% of users who play these games do so daily.[2]
Simple Conclusions
The statistics really speak for themselves on this one. The mobile app gaming industry is a great way to make some cash. All you have to do is come up with an addicting, well-designed game and you’re off to the races. Do you have what it takes to be the next Candy Crush Saga?
